Automatic Visual Speech Recognition (AVSR), commonly referred to as automated lip reading, converts silent visual representations of speaking mouths into textual output. Traditional computer vision techniques rely on handcrafted spatial features and static classifiers, which struggle under variations in illumination, pose, head motion, and speaker diversity. This paper presents an end-to-end deep learning framework for continuous text extraction from video sequences without acoustic signals. Our model combines a 3D Convolutional Neural Network (3D-CNN) front-end for spatiotemporal feature extraction, a 2D ResNet-18 residual backbone, and a Dual-layer Bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory (BiLSTM) network paired with a Connectionist Temporal Classification (CTC) loss function. Evaluated on standardized benchmark datasets (GRID Corpus and Lip Reading in the Wild - LRW), the proposed system achieves a Word Error Rate (WER) of 10.4% and a Character Error Rate (CER) of 4.8%, outperforming traditional sequence models and matching state-of-the-art Transformer-based architectures.
